FIRST GRADERS FROM OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THEIR GREAT FRIEND: SCIENCE!

During this scholar year, first graders have done a very important job to learn many things around them that, due to pandemic, they hadn’t had the chance before. Specifically in Science, they have learned about living things, like how to grow a plant by fulfilling its needs. They started by germinating beans, they pour water every other day and they got very excited with the results.

They could really notice that living beings need water, air and sunlight to survive. The comments in general said that they had never seen this process so close growing that big! =) By this experiment they lived very nearly our first Competence “Jesus is my friend and he loves me” because they realized that nature is a gift from God.

But they have worked on more competences like when they developed competence 8 “I research and question” and competence 5 “I express myself freely” at our Science Lab in an amazing experiment representing flowers using different materials.

They learned the life cycle of a plant and got surprised with the experiment because it showed them the beginning, middle and end of this process. Just look at her faces!

Nowadays they are learning everything about celestial bodies and they started with the biggest star seen from Earth, the SUN! Students learned the benefits this beautiful star can provide us, as well as some of the inconveniences it can cause if we don’t pay attention to it, so they tasted the sun’s action by doing an experiment where they could see how a colored paper changed its color after a period of time under the sun, not like on a piece of paper where they had put some sunscreen lotion. They were very surprised to see the difference and understood the importance of wearing sunscreen every day so as to take care of their skin.

We could notice that after this experiment first graders are wearing sunscreen more often than before. And they commented that now, that they know this reaction they are going to take more care of themselves, as our second “I value and take care of myself” and third competence “I analyze and make proposals, so their family members wear sunscreen too.
